Learn to shred that bass guitar!
* Find a good teacher. Remember, a great player doesn't necessarily translate to a good teacher. A good teacher will challenge your abilities and help you to work for the knowledge and understand the instrument. * Jam with people. Playing music can be more fun with other people than playing by yourself. You'll also learn how to play against other instruments. When first playing with others it might be awkward at first, you'll get used to it. *Once you get comfortable with your own playing and with others, try finding an open mic night that has a band you can get up on-stage with to get some stage experience, getting over this will help gaining confidence in your abilities and help you to relax when playing with other musicians you've never played with before. * Get a tuner. Not everyone is able to tell the exact note by ear alone. A tuner will help you keep in tune. * Overall interaction with other musicians will help as well. * Going to concerts will always help motivate you or remind you why you started in the first place. * Don't be afraid to take a break. Sometimes you need to step away from your instrument to progress. Just make sure you come back to it. * It's a good idea to learn to use your first two fingers (index and middle)(Being the traditional way to play an electric bass) or a pick to pluck the strings (The guitar-style approach to playing electric bass). Learn to use two (or even three) fingers which will allow you to play faster. Using fingers to pluck the strings also gives the player accent capabilities that a pick doesn't. With a pick, learn to first use an downward stroke and then an upward stroke. Put the two strokes together for faster time-signatures. * Soaking your fingers in water will help ease the pain in your fingers. * Calluses will build on your fingertips over time playing the bass, the blisters will stop happening and you will get used to the strings.
