Tips on learning to play bass guitar

1. Get a decent bass. If you want to continue playing bass, you're likely to upgrade from your bass eventually.
2. You need to know the name of the 4 strings. On a standard Bass they are, beginning from the thickest string, furthest away from the floor, E-A-D-G. G being the thinnest string and closest to the floor.
3. Learn every note on the fretboard from front to back and from back to front. You can do this yourself by remembering that the names of the notes on a string always go from A to G, where an open string produces a note after which the string is named. Keep in mind that all natural notes (A B C D E F G) are a whole step (2 frets) apart, except between E-F and B-C which are a half step (1 fret) apart. For the open string and first 12 frets of the G string, this will thus be (starting with the open string): G _ A _ B C _ D _ E F _ G where "_" is a fret not playing a natural note.
4. Learn about musical notation and music theory. If you are serious about becoming a good bass player, you will need to know your music. Just keep in mind that the music theory was born from the music, not the other way around. Feel free to experiment!
5. Learn your scales. Your scales are your fundamentals. You'll refer back to your scales when you begin to construct bass lines.
6. Listen to other musicians, not just other bassists. Listen to the drummer who keeps the time and rhythm.
7. Play around with triads, chords, and other such techniques as you become comfortable with the basics.
8. Play scales and chords, so you can play songs easier.
9. Try to make your own song on your bass.
10. Try to play music written for another instrument (e.g. music written for a piano, or a trumpet) on your bass. If you know musical notation, this will not be a problem. Doing this will only benefit your musical knowledge and might give you inspiration.
11. Listen to genres you would not normally listen to. If you like jazz, listen to death metal for a change. If you're into funk, try to play a Latin song.
